No. 2-ranked Stanford was on its way to another dominating win over Cal in the semifinals of the Pac-10 tournament on Saturday, when Cal’s all-conference guard Alexis Gray-Lawson landed awkwardly on her head with about five minutes left.
The fifth-year senior lay motionless for about 15 minutes, before being removed on a stretcher and taken to the hospital. Cal coach Joanne Boyle said Gray-Lawson was talking and alert while on the stretcher and had full mobility, but she was scheduled to undergo precautionary tests at the hosptial.
In all likelihood, the loss to Cal eliminated the Bears from consideration for an NCAA Tournament berth, although they no doubt will watch Monday’s selection show and hope for the best.
The game was all Stanford, who took a 26-point lead early in the second half and rolled to a 64-44 victory. The Cardinal will face UCLA in Sunday’s 3 p.m. championship game at the Galen Center in Los Angeles. The Bruins beat USC 59-53 in the other smifinals on Saturday.
Stanford senior Jayne Appel did not start the game against Cal, but played 19 minutes in her longest playing stint since spraining her ankle nearly two weeks ago. Pac-10 player of the year Nneka Ogwumike had 18 points and 10 rebounds in 28 minutes of action for the Cardinal.
