While Cal was advancing to the Pac-10 tournament championship game with its win on Friday, Jerome Randle became the school’s alltime leading scorer. Randle had 24 points while helping the Bears to an 85-72 victory over UCLA in the semifinals at the Staples Center, and that enabled Randle to move past Sean Lampley, who had held the record since 2001.
“He’s the best shooter I’ve ever been around,” Cal coach Mike Montgomery said of Randle.
Randle now has 1,800 points, which puts head of Lampley, Lamond Murray, Kevin Johnson and a bunch of other high-scoring players in Cal history.
Unnoticed in Randle’s surge to the top is the fact that Patrick Christopher moved up to No. 4 on Cal’s career scoring list with his 16 points on Friday. He needs 18 points in Saturday’s 3 p.m. title game to tie Murray for the No. 3 spot. The Bears would have to go a long way in the NCAA Tournament for Christopher to catch Lampley, though, because Lampley is 106 points ahad of Christopher at the moment.
